Creation and dissemination residency

The residency

Selected artists will have access to technical and logistical support, the combined equipment pools of all four partner organizations, as well as professional promotion and dissemination services. Artists working with technologies or techniques that are unfamiliar, yet essential to their project's realization, may also benefit from the guidance of experts. This specialized technical support is supplementary to any existing professional services provided by the teams at all four partner organizations. Selected artists will be offered a membership to partner organizations for the full duration of their project.  A coordinator will manage and follow up on the progress of selected projects.

Once the residency agreement has been signed, artists will have access to all resources necessary for the production and dissemination of their work for a period of 24 months. Depending on the type of work in question, specific dissemination requirements will be arranged between partner organizations and the artist.


Support provided to each selected artist is valued at $32,000. Costs are broken down as follows:

Residency artist fee: $5,000
Initial dissemination rights: $2,500
Access to equipment and technical services*: $14,000
Outside expert honorariums: $2,800
Dissemination and promotion costs: $8,000


For artists residing off the island of Montreal:

Transportation fees: up to $2,000
Accommodation and per diem: up to $4,000


*Amounts are established based on partner organizations' standard/non-member rates.


To take part in LUX:

  • Applicants must be recognized as professional artists*.
  • Applicant must be Canadian citizens or have resided in Canada for a minimum of two years.
  • Applicants must hold full creative and editorial control of their project.
  • Applicants must not be registered in full-time studies at an educational institution, with the exception of doctoral students. In the case of doctoral students, the project must have been independent from its conception.
  • Employees or Board members of any of the partner organizations are not eligible to apply.
  • Collectives are eligible to apply. However, the budget and resources provided in this case are the same as for individual artists.

Only the creator of the artwork may apply to this competition. The artist must adhere to eligibility criteria throughout the duration of the agreement.


*A professional artist is recognized as a professional by their peers; creates, performs or publishes artworks for dissemination in a professional context; attempts to earn a living through their arts practice; and receives artist fees for the works they create.


Three artists will be selected to take part in LUX. Artists are chosen by a jury made up of their peers. Assessment criteria are as follows:

  • the creative and experimental value of the project;
  • the quality of the artist's creative process as it relates to the project in question;
  • the quality of previous work;
  • the artist's ability to complete the project;
  • the project's significance in the context of the artist's professional development;
  • the dissemination potential of the work.

The artist is expected to:

  • sign a production agreement with partner organizations;
  • sign a distribution or dissemination agreement, if applicable, based on the type of work created. The artist will nevertheless retain exclusive rights to the work.
  • be the principal creator of the work;
  • communicate their needs clearly to the coordinator at every stage of the project's development;
  • contribute to the work's dissemination (developing the installation, setting up the work, giving artist talks, etc.);
  • participate in the assessment of the experience.

To submit a proposal, artists must complete an application form and include:

  • the project description (1,500 words maximum);
  • an artist bio (300 words maximum);
  • technical requirements for the project (500 words maximum);
  • the proposed timeline for production (500 words maximum);
  • the project's financial structure;
  • anticipated partners, if applicable;

as well as the following support documents:

  • CV (3 pages maximum);
  • visual support material of previous works or works that help to clarify the proposal. Maximum of 15 images (max: 1024px width, 72 dpi) or 10 minutes of video (URL with password, if applicable);
  • PDFs of sketches, plans and scale models may also be submitted.
